Mondulkiri’s Pounong Indigenous Community Urges More Visitors to Leng Kao Waterfall Amid Tourism Decline

MONDULKIRI – The Pounong indigenous community in Mondulkiri province is issuing an earnest appeal for increased national and international tourism to its unique natural attraction, the Leng Kao Waterfall. This call comes amidst a noticeable decline in visitor numbers projected for the current year, raising concerns about community livelihoods.

The Leng Kao Waterfall, a stunning natural landmark, is nestled within Andong Kraloeng Village, Sen Norom Commune, Oreang District. Its accessibility is notable, located merely 500 meters from a main rubber road. The community managing the site highlights its significant tourism potential, boasting dense, pristine forests and three picturesque waterfalls.

Beyond its natural beauty, the Leng Kao Waterfall Community offers a rich array of services designed to provide an immersive cultural and ecotourism experience. These include guided forest tours, dedicated camping facilities, captivating performances of traditional indigenous masks, and opportunities to experience local housing and authentic Pounong cuisine.

While 2024 saw a healthy influx of approximately 1,200 tourists, the community anticipates a significant decrease in visitors for 2025. This projected downturn is believed to be influenced by regional or national challenges that have impacted travel and tourism.

Representatives from the Leng Kao Waterfall Community are actively encouraging both local and international travelers to explore the site. The objective extends beyond mere visitation; it aims to bolster the community’s economic well-being and simultaneously reduce deforestation by channeling support through tourism services. Engaging with the community not only provides insight into the Pounong people’s traditional way of life but also directly contributes to job creation and improves local livelihoods.

The Leng Kao Waterfall Community was formally established in 2022 and began welcoming tourists in 2024. Its operations are significantly supported by collaborative efforts with the Ministry of Environment and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). Through its tourism initiatives, the community strategically utilizes service revenue to sustain the local economy and fund crucial reforestation efforts within the region.
