Cambodia Establishes Major International Multipurpose Port in Kampong Chhnang, Boosting Logistics with 2 Million-Ton Capacity

The Royal Government of Cambodia has officially moved forward with the establishment of the “Kampong Chhnang Multipurpose Port and Logistics Center,” a significant infrastructure project designed to enhance the nation’s waterway transportation capabilities. This new port is projected to handle approximately two million tons of cargo annually, serving as a critical hub for international maritime navigation and goods transfer.

Located in Chambak Khpos village, Svay Rumpear commune, Kampong Leaeng district, Kampong Chhnang province, the port’s creation was formalized through a sub-decree signed by Prime Minister Hun Manet on March 13. The decree explicitly states that the Kampong Chhnang Multipurpose Port and Logistics Center is designed to accommodate international vessels, allowing them to enter, exit, anchor, and facilitate the loading and unloading of various types of cargo, including general goods, containers, and bulk commodities.

The port encompasses both water and land areas. The water area, designated as public state property, is divided into two main sections. The first section measures 90,471.86 square meters and stretches along the riverbank, featuring two sides each 100 meters long, with a total length of 929.46 meters along the river. The second section, spanning 132,000.77 square meters, is situated adjacent to Koh Russei island, with two sides each 120 meters long and extending 1,100 meters along the island.

Similarly, the land area associated with the port is also divided into two parts. The first part, covering 220,723.30 square meters, is privately owned by KLP.T Transstation Co., Ltd. The second part, a public state property, is located on Koh Russei island within the Tonle Sap lake, covering an area of 138,013.86 square meters. A crucial component of this project includes the construction of a bridge connecting the mainland and the island, ensuring seamless connectivity and efficient logistics operations.

The comprehensive port infrastructure will feature modern facilities such as ship berths, dedicated cargo storage areas, container yards, warehouses, an administrative building, a cargo inspection building, vehicle weighbridges, and various security systems. To ensure safe, secure, and environmentally responsible navigation within the area, the Kampong Chhnang Multipurpose Port will also be equipped with designated anchoring zones, vessel turning basins, and essential navigation aids.

For the management and operation of this vital facility, the Royal Government has appointed KLP.T Transstation Co., Ltd. as the managing entity. The company’s responsibilities will include developing comprehensive plans, overseeing construction or renovation activities, managing the port’s infrastructure, and collecting service fees in accordance with prevailing regulations.

Furthermore, the Kampong Chhnang Multipurpose Port and Logistics Center will host a range of competent officials. These will include quarantine officers, immigration police, Cambodia Customs and Excise officials, provincial administration representatives, and port commanders, all tasked with enforcing laws and overseeing the smooth execution of waterway transport operations.

The establishment of this significant multipurpose port is widely expected to contribute substantially to strengthening Cambodia’s overall waterway transport system. It will enhance cargo handling capacity in the Tonle Sap region and is poised to stimulate economic activities and logistics development not only in Kampong Chhnang but also across its neighboring provinces.
