Cambodia is set to host three significant international tourism promotion events, a strategic move anticipated to substantially boost the nation’s appeal as a premier destination. These ambitious initiatives, part of the larger ‘The Kingdom’s Grand Prix & Gala’ project, are being spearheaded by a Malaysian business group and have garnered the full backing of the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism.
The foundation for these events was laid during a productive meeting held on March 2nd between H.E. Huot Hak, Cambodia’s Minister of Tourism, and Mr. Michael Cheow, Chairman of C. Michael International Sdn. Bhd., alongside a delegation of Malaysian investors. During this crucial discussion, the Malaysian representatives officially sought the Ministry of Tourism’s support for organizing these high-profile international events within Cambodia.
The three planned international tourism promotion events include:
1. **An International Music Festival:** Envisioned as a world-class celebration, this festival aims to showcase both contemporary artistic talent and Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage, drawing global audiences to the Kingdom’s vibrant traditions.
2. **A Professional Speed Boat Race:** This event promises a thrilling water sports spectacle along Cambodia’s stunning coastline. Beyond entertainment, it seeks to promote coastal tourism and raise vital environmental awareness for the region’s marine ecosystems.
3. **A GT (Grand Touring) Car Race:** An elite motorsport competition designed to elevate Cambodia’s international standing among automotive enthusiasts and attract high-spending tourists. This high-octane event aims to position Cambodia as a destination capable of hosting prestigious global sporting spectacles.
Mr. Michael Cheow expressed strong confidence in the transformative potential of these events. He stated that these initiatives would not only stimulate the local economy and create new employment opportunities but also vividly demonstrate Cambodia’s readiness to successfully host large-scale, modern international events.
Minister Huot Hak highly commended the initiative, affirming the Ministry of Tourism’s unwavering support for organizing these groundbreaking international events in Cambodia, with the first installment slated for 2026. He conveyed his conviction that these tourism events will be a source of immense pride for the investors and will deliver substantial economic benefits to the Cambodian populace.
Furthermore, the Minister urged Mr. Cheow and the Malaysian business delegation to continue advocating for Cambodia by disseminating positive messages about the nation’s peace and potential to the people of Malaysia. H.E. Huot Hak reiterated that Cambodia remains a safe and secure tourist destination, brimming with high potential for tourism investment.
Providing a broader context for the Kingdom’s tourism landscape, reports from the Ministry of Tourism indicate that in 2025, Cambodia welcomed approximately 5.57 million international tourists. This figure represented a 16.9 percent decrease compared to 2024, a decline attributed by the Ministry to global political and economic crises, alongside border disputes. Despite this overall trend, Malaysian tourism to Cambodia saw positive growth in 2025, with 96,268 Malaysian visitors, marking a 2.1 percent increase. Overall, the international tourists visiting Cambodia in 2025 contributed an estimated $3.7 billion USD to the national economy.
