Phnom Penh, Cambodia – Prime Minister Samdech Hun Manet has asserted that the newly inaugurated Techo International Airport is set to become a pivotal force in attracting significantly more tourists and investors to Cambodia, surpassing pre-COVID-19 global crisis levels. The Prime Minister’s remarks, delivered at the official inauguration ceremony of the airport on the morning of October 20, 2025, underscored its substantial capacity to accommodate both regional and intercontinental flights.
Techo International Airport, designated as a 4F class facility, stands as the largest airport in Cambodia. Its advanced infrastructure is capable of handling wide-body aircraft, including models such as the Airbus A380-800 and the Boeing 747-800, marking a significant upgrade to the nation’s aviation capabilities.
Speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister Hun Manet emphasized Cambodia’s commitment to further expanding its aviation sector in the future. He articulated a forward-looking vision, stating, “Cambodia is not closing doors to expansion elsewhere. While this new 4F level airport is larger than the one in Siem Reap, both facilities combined will work to realize the full potential of our ‘open skies’ policy for continued development and prosperity.”
The Prime Minister also confirmed that the Cambodian government has proactively secured numerous agreements with major international partners, including Australia, to establish new direct flight connections. These initiatives are expected to bring a greater influx of visitors and capital, strengthening Cambodia’s global connectivity.
The Techo International Airport project represents a total investment of $2.3 billion, spanning an expansive construction area of 2,600 hectares. Strategically located between Kandal Steung district in Kandal province and Bati district in Takeo province, the airport’s development commenced on January 7, 2020, and concluded on July 31, 2025, taking over five years to complete.
During its first operational phase, projected from 2020 to 2030, the airport is anticipated to serve 15 million passengers and handle approximately 170,000 tons of cargo annually. Since its operational launch, Techo International Airport has already demonstrated significant activity, currently averaging 150,000 passengers and 130 flights—both inbound and outbound—per day. The airport is presently served by 29 airlines, 25 of which are international carriers, highlighting its immediate impact on Cambodia’s air travel landscape.
