Phnom Penh, Cambodia – Cambodia and Vietnam have reaffirmed their strong commitment to significantly strengthen economic cooperation, setting an ambitious target to boost bilateral trade volume to US$20 billion in the foreseeable future. This resolute pledge comes as the trade between the two neighboring nations has already reached an impressive US$11.33 billion in 2025, underscoring the robust growth in their economic ties and deepening interconnectedness.
This renewed commitment was notably articulated during the official and friendly three-day visit of Samdech Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly of Cambodia, to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The visit, which took place from July 27 to July 29, 2026, was made at the invitation of Mr. Tran Thanh Man, President of the National Assembly of Vietnam. According to a press release from the General Secretariat of the National Assembly, Samdech Khuon Sudary expressed profound satisfaction with the progress of cooperation between the governments of both nations, particularly highlighting the impressive growth in trade, which surpassed US$11.33 billion in 2025. The Cambodian National Assembly President lauded this outcome as a positive indicator, bringing tangible benefits to the citizens and economies of both countries.
The same press release further indicated that the Cambodian side highly valued the meeting between Samdech Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia, and Vietnamese leaders in June 2026. That earlier engagement had already emphasized strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across critical sectors. During these discussions, both parties committed to fostering economic integration, enhancing transport infrastructure connectivity, and streamlining trade facilitation efforts. These measures are pivotal to achieving the ambitious goal of increasing bilateral trade to US$20 billion in the future. Concurrently, both nations expressed their intent to reinforce closer people-to-people exchanges, fostering greater understanding and solidarity.
Beyond the robust trade agenda, leaders from both Cambodia and Vietnam also concurred on advancing cooperation in a wide array of other crucial sectors. These include comprehensive economic and transport infrastructure connectivity, the development of a technology- and innovation-based economy, as well as collaboration in trade, security, national defense, tourism, agriculture, education, healthcare, and support for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs).
According to the press release, the National Assemblies of both countries recognize that strengthening this multifaceted cooperation will not only stimulate economic development and elevate the living standards of their respective populations but also significantly contribute to maintaining peace, stability, and prosperity within the wider region.
During her productive visit, Samdech Khuon Sudary engaged in discussions with several top Vietnamese leaders, including the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President, Mr. To Lam; the President of the National Assembly, Mr. Tran Thanh Man; and Prime Minister, Mr. Le Minh Hung. Across these high-level meetings, both sides unequivocally reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to continually reinforce the traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation, with a steadfast focus on prioritizing the well-being and interests of their people.
