The four northeastern provinces of Cambodia—Kratie, Stung Treng, Mondulkiri, and Ratanakiri—have attracted a substantial 72 investment proposals, collectively valued at an impressive $2.7 billion. Of these, 57 projects are currently undergoing review and advancing through the necessary procedural stages. This significant development was announced by Prime Minister Hun Manet during the official inauguration of various achievements in Stung Treng City, Stung Treng Province, on a recent Wednesday morning.
The Prime Minister further detailed that these 72 projects are projected to generate nearly 83,000 new employment opportunities. This figure encompasses the period from the launch of the special investment promotion program for the four northeastern provinces, slated for 2025-2028, which commenced around April 2025, up until August 7, 2026.
The special investment promotion program itself, spanning from 2025 to 2028, is strategically designed to cover three pivotal sectors: agriculture, agro-industry, and tourism. To foster a conducive investment environment, the government’s working group has implemented a comprehensive suite of support and promotional measures. These include significant tax and customs duty reductions, access to financing provided below market interest rates, initiatives to help reduce production costs, and the streamlining of investment procedures to enhance efficiency.
Beyond the northeastern region, Cambodia as a whole has seen robust investment activity. From the beginning of the year until August 7, 2026, the nation registered 214 foreign investment projects. These projects represent a total capital investment approaching $4 billion and are expected to create approximately 140,000 jobs nationwide.
Addressing certain public concerns that a high number of registered projects might not translate into actual implementation, Prime Minister Hun Manet provided reassurance. He highlighted that an impressive 95.75 percent of projects registered between 2023, 2024, and 2025 are actively progressing and moving forward. Only about 5 percent of these registered projects have not proceeded to implementation. The Prime Minister underscored the government’s unwavering commitment to continuously address and resolve both minor and major impediments that may hinder investment momentum. The goal is to further enhance the effectiveness of these efforts, creating an increasingly easier and more favorable environment for both domestic and foreign direct investment across the country. He also reiterated Cambodia’s substantial potential for attracting further investment and affirmed the government’s dedication to uplifting individuals working within the informal economy.
