Phnom Penh, Cambodia – In a significant step towards modernizing public services and strengthening governance, Cambodia has officially launched its new “Digital Driver’s License” system. This innovative initiative, which became operational on May 13, promises to deliver a fast, accurate, and secure method for verifying driving credentials, while simultaneously helping to eliminate identity fraud and corruption within the public sector.
The digital driver’s license system allows for robust verification of authenticity through the national document verification platform, verify.gov.kh. This crucial feature is designed to reduce citizens’ costs and time spent on administrative processes, making interactions with public services more efficient and reliable.
The official launch ceremony was presided over by prominent government officials, including Mr. Chea Vandeth, Minister of Post and Telecommunications, and Mr. Peng Ponea, Minister of Public Works and Transport. Senior officials from the Ministry of Interior and traffic law enforcement agencies also participated, underscoring the collaborative effort behind this digital revolution. The cooperation between these ministries aims to provide greater convenience for all types of vehicle drivers and to effectively prevent the falsification of driver’s licenses.
Vehicle owners can easily, quickly, and freely apply for their digital driver’s license through the DG Super App. Mr. Chea Vandeth, who also serves as the Chairman of the Digital Government Committee, highlighted the transformative impact of the system. He stated that the digital driver’s license verification system will save time, reduce expenses, and significantly decrease user frustration often associated with lengthy waits, corruption, and identity fraud in public services. He further explained that the system connects the Ministry of Public Works’ automation network with the verify.gov.kh platform, enabling precise verification of license validity, checking penalty points, and accessing other relevant driver data.
Echoing these sentiments, Mr. Peng Ponea emphasized the importance of digital verification, stating that it will save valuable time for both government officials and drivers. He clarified that the digital driver’s license serves as a convenient and reliable alternative to physical documents, especially when drivers forget or prefer not to carry their original license.
The digital driver’s license system, validated through verify.gov.kh, is structured into three distinct types of verification:
1. **QR Code Verification for Existing Licenses:** Driver’s licenses previously issued by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport that feature a QR Code can be verified by scanning the code directly. This action redirects the data to the verify.gov.kh platform for immediate authentication.
2. **Digital Wallet Integration via DG Super App:** Individuals can store a digital version of their driver’s license in their “Personal Wallet” within the DG Super App. By scanning the Ministry of Public Works’ QR Code on their existing physical license, users can request a standard QR Code from the verify.gov.kh platform for digital storage and verification.
3. **Future Standardized QR Code Licenses:** New driver’s licenses that will feature a standard QR Code directly linked for verification via verify.gov.kh are scheduled to be implemented and operational from May 13, 2026.
The process for applying for a digital driver’s license via the DG Super App is designed to be user-friendly, taking less than three minutes to complete and obtain the digital credential. Citizens interested in acquiring their digital driver’s license are encouraged to download the DG Super App from either the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
This initiative marks a significant stride in Cambodia’s digital transformation journey, promising a more efficient, transparent, and secure environment for its citizens.
