Samdech Hun Sen Firmly Denies Business Ties with Thaksin Amidst Asset Freezing Reports

Cambodian Senate President Samdech Hun Sen has unequivocally stated that he has never discussed business or forged economic links for personal or family profit with former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. This definitive statement was made on the evening of September 15, following widespread reports indicating that Thaksin holds assets in Cambodia which Cambodian authorities were allegedly preparing to freeze.

In a subsequent post on his official Facebook page, Samdech Hun Sen elaborated on the matter, emphasizing his responsibility to uphold Thaksin’s reputation regarding these allegations, despite any existing differences between them. He asserted that not only Thaksin Shinawatra but also his sister, former Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, possess no property or business interests within Cambodia.

Samdech Hun Sen further clarified, stating, ‘Whether His Excellency Thaksin or Lok Chumteav Yingluck, there is no wealth or business in Cambodia. When His Excellency Thaksin or Yingluck visit Cambodia, they utilize my vehicles, demonstrating that they do not possess any property here.’ This highlights the absence of their own infrastructure or assets in the country.

The Senate President also called for an immediate cessation to the spread of false information concerning this matter. He urged that if the misinformation originated within Cambodia, it should be stopped to preserve national dignity, stressing the importance of truthfulness and integrity for the Khmer nation. Conversely, if the fictitious reports stemmed from sources in Thailand, Samdech Hun Sen affirmed that he expects Thai authorities to take appropriate action to address and resolve the issue.
