Ratanakkiri’s Cashew Farmers Grapple with Low Prices Amid Investment Shortfalls

Ratanakkiri, a province renowned for its vast cashew cultivation, faces significant economic challenges despite its considerable potential. While it boasts one of Cambodia’s largest cashew growing areas, the region’s geographical remoteness and a notable lack of strategic investment have unfortunately hindered its agricultural sector. Specifically, the absence of major traders and essential processing factories coming into the province means that cashew nuts harvested in this northeastern region consistently fetch lower prices compared to other parts of the country.

This persistent issue of depressed cashew prices poses a substantial challenge for local farmers, particularly small-scale plantation owners who typically cultivate between one and two hectares and often lack a robust, streamlined production process. Their livelihoods are directly impacted by these market dynamics, making it difficult to sustain their operations.

To address this disparity and provide crucial support to its farming community, Ratanakkiri province urgently needs strategic investment. The establishment of cashew processing factories and large grain warehouses, capable of absorbing between 5,000 to 10,000 tons of output annually, is crucial. Such infrastructure would significantly improve prices for farmers by adding value to the raw produce and help prevent market saturation and drastic price drops during peak harvest seasons.

Heng Panha, a local farmer, articulated the sentiment of many, stating, “Ratanakkiri is like a bride who looks skipped. This means that traders and merchants do not come in much, which makes the price of the cashew nuts here lower than in other provinces. If it continues like that, we [farmers] will find it difficult because prices always fall sharply during the big harvest season.”

Despite these challenges, there have been some positive shifts in the market. Currently, the price of raw cashew nuts has seen a notable increase, ranging from over 6,000 to more than 7,000 Riel per kilogram. This recent rise represents the highest price recorded in history, offering a glimmer of hope to farmers.

According to the “Cashew Cultivation Area in Cambodia 2024” document, Cambodia as a whole possesses a total of 580,117 hectares dedicated to cashew cultivation, with an estimated annual production potential of approximately 816,459 tons. Ratanakkiri province alone contributes significantly to this national figure, with 98,956 hectares of cashew cultivation area. Of this, 98,157 hectares are currently harvested, yielding an estimated 80,490 tons per year. This data underscores Ratanakkiri’s vital role in the national cashew industry and the urgency of addressing its market inefficiencies to ensure sustainable growth and prosperity for its farming communities.
