The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has announced a significant donation of 70 reproductive health medical kits to Cambodia’s Ministry of Health. This crucial initiative aims to safeguard the lives of women, girls, and newborns in communities situated along the nation’s border regions.
In a press release issued on January 12, UNFPA emphasized the pivotal role played by the Ministry of Health in ensuring the continuous provision of essential healthcare services. This includes the strategic deployment of mobile health teams from various provinces and national hospitals to areas affected by border emergencies. Ensuring that health services remain operational during times of crisis, particularly for expectant mothers, is a paramount priority for both the Ministry of Health and UNFPA.
According to UNFPA, these vital medical supplies are designed to ensure that women and newborns receive life-saving interventions, even amidst the most challenging circumstances. The 70 reproductive health kits, which have been delivered to the Central Medical Stores, encompass a comprehensive range of medical equipment and medicines essential for emergency obstetric and newborn care.
Specifically, the donation includes a variety of specialized kits: nineteen Hygiene and Sanitation Kits (Kit-2B) are provided to facilitate safe deliveries within refugee camps and local communities. Additionally, eighteen Delivery Assistance Kits (Kit-6A & Kit-6B), split equally between the two types, offer both reusable medical tools and critical medications for healthcare facilities. Six Emergency Obstetric Care Kits (Kit-11A & Kit-11B), with three of each type, are designated for managing complications arising from obstetric surgeries in provincial referral hospitals. Furthermore, specialized essential kits include nine for managing miscarriage complications, nine for repairing cervical and vaginal tears, and nine for vacuum extraction procedures during childbirth.
His Excellency Chheang Ra, Cambodia’s Minister of Health, highlighted the profound importance of the partnership with UNFPA. He stated that this collaboration is critical to the Ministry’s mission of achieving universal health coverage and ensuring that no individual is left behind, even during crises. Minister Chheang Ra affirmed that the safety and well-being of women, mothers, and newborns remain a constant priority. He further expressed hope that by strengthening emergency preparedness and medical readiness along the borders, the welfare of mothers, infants, and other vulnerable populations would be effectively protected.
The Ministry of Health has reiterated its steadfast commitment to guaranteeing that all citizens, especially those impacted by conflicts or emergencies, have access to high-quality and equitable healthcare services.
Ms. Sandra Bernklau, UNFPA Representative in Cambodia, commended the Ministry of Health’s dedication and leadership. She praised their efforts in ensuring healthcare access for everyone in need, particularly for women and girls facing difficult situations. Ms. Bernklau concluded by emphasizing that these reproductive health kits are instrumental in supporting all mothers and newborns during emergency situations.
