Phnom Penh, Cambodia – Techo International Airport (KTI), a state-of-the-art 4F-class facility, is poised for its official inauguration ceremony on October 20th. The momentous event will be presided over by Samdech Hun Manet, marking a significant milestone for Cambodia’s infrastructure development. This grand opening follows more than a month of operational activity, during which the over $2 billion airport has already been successfully receiving flights since September 9, 2025.
According to a press release issued by the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation on October 9th, the official inauguration program for Techo International Airport is scheduled to take place from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM on October 20th. In light of the high-profile event, the Civil Aviation authority has also requested understanding and cooperation from all travelers, as enhanced security and safety measures will be strictly enforced for both entry into and exit from the airport premises during this period.
Techo International Airport stands as a historical achievement for Cambodia, born from a collaborative public-private partnership investment with the Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation (OCIC). Spanning an expansive area of 2,600 hectares across Kandal province and parts of Takeo province, this monumental project represents an investment of approximately $2 billion. In its initial phase, running from 2025 to 2030, the airport, strategically located approximately 20 kilometers from Phnom Penh, is designed to accommodate an impressive 13 million passengers annually. Projections indicate that this capacity will further expand to 30 million passengers per year in its second phase, set to operate from 2030 to 2050.
The establishment of the 4F-level Techo International Airport underscores Cambodia’s remarkable progress and its ambition for world-class infrastructure. Boasting global-standard scale and innovative design, the airport has garnered international recognition, notably being listed as one of the 11 most outstanding architectural constructions worldwide for its creative and sustainable design. This modern international hub is fully equipped to handle long-haul, intercontinental flights, capable of accommodating massive aircraft such as the Airbus A380-800 and Boeing 747-800. Furthermore, an assessment by Civil Aviation has positioned Techo International Airport as the 9th highest-ranked globally among airports of the 4F category.
In a broader context of Cambodia’s aviation sector growth, a report from the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation highlights robust performance across the nation’s three international airports—Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville. For the seven-month period from January to July, these airports collectively managed 37,492 incoming and outgoing flights. This figure represents a substantial increase of nearly 16 percent compared to the corresponding period in 2024. Concurrently, passenger traffic also saw significant growth, with 4.08 million inbound and outbound passengers recorded, marking an almost 16 percent rise. Air cargo volumes demonstrated even stronger expansion, totaling 47,218 tons, an impressive 28 percent increase over the same period.
