Phnom Penh, Cambodia – The General Department of Consumer Protection, Competition and Crackdown on Counterfeiting (KPR), operating under Cambodia’s Ministry of Commerce, has announced that it has yet to discover any counterfeit Vietnamese cooking oil in the Cambodian market. This assurance comes after a thorough and widespread inspection campaign conducted across Phnom Penh and 107 target provinces.
Professional officials from the KPR meticulously inspected various public and private markets, as well as supermarket stalls, to verify the quality and authenticity of cooking oil products. These comprehensive investigations took place on October 18 and 19.
The focus of the inspection was specifically on five brands of frying oil products that had been identified in Vietnam as potentially failing to meet quality standards or being counterfeit, according to declarations by the Vietnamese Food Safety Authority. The brands in question are CHICA, TAMIN GOLD, GOLDMAX, TOT, and MEGAFOOD.
Confirming the findings, the Director General of the KPR stated on the morning of October 20, “As a result of our efforts, officials have not yet found any of the five brands of counterfeit cooking oil products as announced by the Vietnamese Food Safety Authority.”
Despite these initial findings, KPR officials emphasized their commitment to ongoing consumer protection. They affirmed that they would continue to cooperate closely with officials from relevant units to investigate further and take strict action against any counterfeit products that might surface, thereby safeguarding the health and interests of Cambodian consumers.
The concern originated from an alert issued by the Vietnam Food Safety Administration (VFA) on October 14, 2024. The VFA had identified GF Vietnam Food Co., Ltd., located in Yen Phu Village, Nguyen Van Linh Commune, Hung Yen province, as producing and distributing some of these five aforementioned cooking oil brands that were of poor quality or deemed counterfeit across various provinces and cities in Vietnam.
