Cambodia Unveils Major International Port in Kampot to Drive Economic Growth and Trade

Cambodia has strategically moved to establish the “Kampot Logistics Port,” a pivotal development aimed at transforming Kampot province into a dynamic economic and logistics hub. This new international port, situated in Chang On Village, Sangkat Prek Tnaot, Bokor City, is designed with a substantial capacity, capable of handling up to 3 million tons of cargo annually.

The port is poised to become an indispensable asset for international shipping services, facilitating the efficient transfer of general cargo, containers, and bulk goods. This initiative is viewed as a crucial economic boost for the people of Kampot and the nation as a whole, promising to enhance Cambodia’s foreign trade capabilities, significantly reduce shipping costs, and generate substantial employment opportunities for local communities.

The establishment of the Kampot Logistics Port was formally authorized through a sub-decree issued by the head of government, Samdech Hun Manet, on March 13. The government anticipates that the port will be instrumental in absorbing transit goods, reaching its projected capacity of 3 million tons per year.

The new port’s jurisdiction is distinctly divided. The water area, spanning over 3.6 million square meters, is designated as public property of the state, ensuring comprehensive maritime management and security. Conversely, the mainland area, exceeding 6.6 million square meters, is classified as private property and is under the direct management of Kampot Logistics & Import Co., Ltd. This company is tasked with the development, construction, maintenance, and the administration of service fees for the port operations.

Despite the private management aspect, all operations at the Kampot Logistics Port will be subject to rigorous inspection and oversight by professional officials from various government institutions. These include officers from Chatalysak, immigration police, customs and Cambodian Excise, the Port Commander, and the Kampot Provincial Administrative Officer, ensuring adherence to all national and international regulations.

In a parallel move demonstrating a broader national logistics strategy, the Cambodian government also announced on the same day the establishment of the “Kampong Chhnang Multi-Purpose Port and Logistics Center.” Located in Kampong Leng district, this facility is designed to provide comprehensive water transport services and cargo transfer for international shipping, with an estimated capacity to handle approximately 2 million tons of transit goods per year. Together, these new ports underscore Cambodia’s commitment to strengthening its logistics infrastructure and fostering sustained economic development.
