Phnom Penh, Cambodia – Both Cambodia and Singapore have expressed deep satisfaction with their robust bilateral relationship, which encompasses both trade and political dimensions and continues to demonstrate steady growth. This mutual appreciation was highlighted during a recent courtesy call and farewell meeting between Ms. Teo Lay Cheng, the outgoing Ambassador of Singapore to Cambodia, and Samdech Hun Sen, Cambodia’s Acting Head of State. The meeting took place at the Senate building on March 4th.
During the discussions, Samdech Hun Sen acknowledged the significant increase in bilateral trade between the two nations, noting that it had already surpassed 5 billion US dollars. The Acting Head of State conveyed his optimism that both the Cambodian and Singaporean governments would intensify their efforts to elevate this bilateral trade figure to an ambitious target of 10 billion US dollars in the coming years. Mr. Chea Thireth, spokesperson for the Senate, later confirmed Samdech Hun Sen’s statement, emphasizing the call for both countries to set and work towards this substantial goal.
Samdech Hun Sen underscored the critical role of strong political, diplomatic, economic, and investment ties as indispensable drivers for further enhancing the relationship between Cambodia and Singapore. He also commended Ambassador Teo Lay Cheng for her dedicated service and significant contributions to strengthening these bonds during her tenure in Cambodia. Samdech Hun Sen specifically praised her efforts in fostering better relations between the two countries.
In her response, Ambassador Teo Lay Cheng expressed her gratitude for the commendation from Cambodia’s Acting Head of State. She further highlighted the continuous progress observed in Cambodia-Singapore relations, particularly in the past year, which has seen parallel advancements in both trade and political spheres. The Ambassador also took the opportunity to remark on Cambodia’s overall development and the palpable sense of peace and stability she witnessed throughout her diplomatic mission in the country. Reflecting on her time, Ambassador Teo Lay Cheng described Cambodia as a wonderful country where she had accumulated many fond memories.
The meeting concluded with a notable gesture: Samdech Hun Sen, as Acting Head of State, bestowed the Grand Cross of the Royal Order of Sahametrei upon Ambassador Teo Lay Cheng, recognizing her valuable service and contributions to bilateral ties.
