Construction Planned for Anti-Pol Pot Movement Memorial in Prey Ta Tok

A significant memorial dedicated to commemorating the movement against the Pol Pot regime in Prey Ta Tok, also known as Area 578, is set to be constructed in the near future. This important historical site will be located in Krabao commune, Kamchay Mear District, within Prey Veng Province.

Mr. Vong Soth, who serves as the Second Vice President of the National Assembly and Chairman of the Documentation Committee for the memorial’s construction, announced that the project aligns with the vision of Samdech Hun Sen, President of the Senate. The primary aim is to meticulously compile and preserve historical documents, while also honoring the profound struggle, unwavering dedication, and heroism demonstrated by the Cambodian people and their leadership during the fight against the genocidal regime, particularly their pursuit of lasting peace for the nation.

During a leadership meeting of the construction committee on September 12, Mr. Vong Soth confirmed the historical importance of Prey Ta Tok. This site, Area 578, was a crucial hub for the resistance movement, where people who fled into the area established a formidable force. This resistance emerged towards the end of May 1978 in the Eastern Zone, specifically to oppose the brutal Pol Pot regime.

The construction committee overseeing this monumental project is structured with four distinct sub-committees. These specialized groups are tasked with researching historical documents, managing the monument’s construction, and handling environmental and cultural aspects. Each sub-committee is responsible for its professional work and operates in close cooperation. Their collective efforts are designed to ensure comprehensive research, thorough documentation, meticulous preparation, and effective construction of the monument’s infrastructure, along with the development of environmental and cultural works, paintings, and sculptures. All these elements are intended to accurately reflect the profound historical values associated with the anti-Pol Pot struggle.

Mr. Vong Soth emphasized that this memorial will serve as vital historical evidence for future generations. It aims to educate descendants, allowing them to understand and remember the immense struggle, sacrifices, and the challenging journey towards peace undertaken by the Cambodian people. Ultimately, the monument will contribute significantly to fostering a spirit of peace and ensuring its preservation for the motherland.
