The Cambodian government is preparing to implement a comprehensive set of key measures aimed at significantly boosting tourism in Siem Reap, the nation’s premier cultural destination. These strategic initiatives, planned for the 2026-2028 period, are designed to revitalize the tourism sector and attract a substantial number of visitors, ensuring a more vibrant tourism environment.
According to the Siem Reap-Angkor Tourism Development Management Committee (CSD), these crucial measures are projected to draw approximately 2 million international tourists to Siem Reap, alongside an estimated 3 million national tourists, all by the year 2028.
Mr. Thong Khon, identified as President of SECC, recently chaired a crucial meeting to approve the draft of the ‘Key Measures for Tourism Development in Siem Reap-Angkor Phase 2 (2026-2028).’ This significant meeting took place at the Office of the Council of Ministers on the morning of September 2.
During the discussions, attendees also reached a consensus on the importance of continuing efforts to enhance human capital capacity within the tourism sector. This includes fostering the development of highly skilled tourism professionals to ensure an elevated quality of service and hospitality for all visitors, further enhancing the destination’s appeal.
Following the meeting, the latest iteration of the document outlining these key measures for Siem Reap’s tourism development from 2026 to 2028 will undergo final revisions. This process will incorporate valuable input and suggestions from various relevant ministries and institutions. Once finalized, the revised plan will be promptly submitted to the Prime Minister for his thorough review and ultimate decision in the near future.
Officials express strong optimism that the rigorous and effective implementation of these key measures will indeed lead to the projected influx of approximately 2 million international tourists and 3 million national tourists by 2028.
It is important to note that these second-phase key measures for the development of Siem Reap-Angkor tourism (2026-2028) are built upon the foundational ‘Siem Reap-Angkor Tourism Development Key Measures 2025’ and are fully aligned with the broader ‘Siem Reap Tourism Development Master Plan 2021-2035’, ensuring continuity and strategic coherence.
