Khmer New Year: Cambodia Confident in Domestic Meat Supply, Urges Traders to Maintain Fair Prices

Phnom Penh, Cambodia – As the Khmer New Year approaches, Cambodia’s robust domestic livestock sector stands ready to meet the anticipated surge in demand for meat products, eliminating the need for imports. However, concerns have been raised regarding potential price gouging by some traders during the festive season.

Mr. Srun Pov, President of the Cambodia Livestock Raisers Association (CLRA), affirmed the industry’s capability to ensure a sufficient supply of all types of meat. He highlighted the significant strengthening of local livestock farming, which now reliably guarantees adequate provisions for major national holidays without concern for shortages.

This year, Mr. Srun Pov anticipates an even higher demand for meat compared to previous years, attributing this rise to several key factors. Firstly, the affordability of locally raised meat makes it accessible to a broader segment of the population. Secondly, the mass return of Cambodian migrant workers and citizens from abroad to reunite with their families significantly boosts consumption. Additionally, numerous village festivals, community gatherings, and ongoing wedding celebrations during this season collectively contribute to the increased demand for meat products across the country.

Despite the strong domestic supply, Mr. Srun Pov expressed apprehension about a small number of traders and vendors who might exploit the holiday period by excessively inflating prices. He noted that such profiteering has unfortunately become a recurring issue during festive occasions.

In light of current economic challenges, particularly the rising costs of fuel and gas, Mr. Srun Pov issued a heartfelt appeal to all traders, vendors, and livestock raisers to uphold fair pricing practices. He urged them to refrain from exploitative profiteering and instead maintain reasonable prices to help alleviate the financial burden on citizens. Emphasizing the spirit of national unity, he called for solidarity among Cambodians, encapsulating the sentiment, “Khmer loves Khmer, helps Khmer” during these critical times. He reiterated that while the sector is well-prepared to meet any level of demand, ensuring affordability and fairness remains crucial for the well-being of the populace.
