The Koh Han ecotourism community in Stung Treng province is currently experiencing a significant surge in visitor numbers, underscoring its growing potential as a premier destination. Supported by a steady stream of both national and international tourists, the community has reported remarkable growth.
According to the Stung Treng provincial administration, the picturesque Koh Han area typically attracts approximately 30,000 tourists during the dry season, which spans from December to April. Mrs. Bun Samphan, President of the Koh Han Ecotourism Community, further elaborated on this upward trend, noting that in the initial months of 2026, visits from both domestic and international travelers to Koh Han Island have doubled.
This substantial increase in tourism is believed to be influenced by evolving travel patterns. A notable factor is the potential redirection of a large number of travelers from traditional destinations, possibly due to regional developments such as the Cambodian-Thai border dispute. This has led many to explore local resorts and entertainment options within Cambodia, with Koh Han emerging as a popular choice.
Mrs. Samphan emphasized the community’s heightened popularity, stating, “This year, Koh Han is exceptionally famous. Previously, visitors primarily arrived on weekends, but now we observe a steady influx of guests throughout the entire week, regardless of the day. We estimate that the number of visitors has even tripled. I believe this trend indicates that many tourists are choosing to visit our local entertainment destinations instead of traveling to neighboring countries like Thailand.”
This robust tourism momentum has brought significant positive change and prosperity to the local community. Residents are benefiting from substantial increases in income generated through various tourism-related services, including tourist boat operations and food sales. This economic uplift not only improves the livelihoods of ordinary families but also provides crucial income and employment opportunities for vulnerable groups, such as widows within the community, enabling them to enhance their household earnings.
The Koh Han ecotourism community boasts rich and diverse tourism potential, characterized by its beautiful scenery. This includes a notable white sand desert, lush forests that provide natural shade, pristine beaches, and a vibrant bird population. The area also offers promising agro-tourism experiences. Located in Choam Thom village, Koh Sneng commune, Borey O’Svay Senchey district, the community is situated approximately 22 kilometers from Stung Treng provincial town, ensuring both natural beauty and a safe, well-ordered environment for its visitors.
